Who was Colin named for? My grandparents use of the naming pattern.

Henry Strachan and Helen McCrae named their children according to the Scottish naming pattern. Their eldest two boys and eldest two girls were named after Henry and Helen’s parents, the third boy and third girl were named after Henry and Helen, and after that the children were named after Henry and Helen’s brothers and sisters. If the person a child was being named after had started life with a different surname to Strachan, that surname became the child’s middle name. This has left me wondering who Colin McCrae was, as Henry and Helen’s children were:

Joseph Strachan

Named after his paternal grandfather, Henry’s father Joseph Strachan

Mary Ann McInairney Strachan

Named after her maternal grandmother, Helen’s mother Mary Ann McInairney (or McInerney)

John McCrae Strachan
Named after his maternal grandfather, Helen’s father John McCrae

Jeannie Haddow Strachan

Named after her paternal grandmother, Henry’s mother Jeannie Haddow

Henry Strachan

Named after his father, Henry Strachan

Matthew McCrae Strachan

Named after his maternal uncle, Matthew McCrae

Helen McCrae Strachan

Named after her mother, Helen McCrae

Colin McCrae Strachan
The naming pattern says he’d have been named for a maternal uncle, but Helen didn’t have a brother called Colin McCrae. In fact, I can’t find a Colin McCrae that could somehow be related, and none of Helen’s siblings named any of their children Colin. There was, however, a paternal uncle Colin Haddow Strachan. So this one is a bit of a mystery: why was he named Colin McCrae Strachan and not Colin Strachan or Colin Haddow Strachan? Did my grandparents make a mistake when registering him?

William McCrae Strachan

Named after his maternal uncle, Helen’s brother William McCrae

Amelia Strachan
Named after her paternal aunt, Henry’s eldest sister Amelia Strachan

Robert Strachan (my father)

Named for his paternal uncle, Henry’s eldest brother Robert Strachan

Really enjoying your blog Judy. Thanks for doing this!

    • So glad you’re enjoying it. I love doing it – I’ve been doing the research for about 15 years but have only recently got round to getting it organised properly and online, so others can share. It’s fantastic to have relatives being able to find out about their ancestors.

  2. I’m really enjoying your blog – our ancestries are quite similar and I feel quite inspired that you’ve managed to find out so much about so many people. Gives me hope! 🙂
