There is a sad addendum to make to my post of yesterday. The news has been sent to me that the relative born in 1964 in Canada has passed away due to breast cancer, taken at far too young an age. I have known too many women lost through this dreadful disease, and my own mother was a breast cancer survivor. I urge everyone to support cancer charities whenever they get the chance.
Today Britain is still basking in sunshine and the glory of Andy Murray’s win. In ancestor land there’s a birthday up in Tyneside, a 90th birthday in Aberdeen, and a migration to Chicago.

Birth of John Strachan (one of many with that name) at Greenock, Renfrewshire, son of John Francis Strachan and Jean Johnstone Loudon, and grandson of my ggg uncle Thomas Strachan and Elizabeth Nisbet. In 1861 he’s with his machinist father, mother and siblings at Hill Street, Greenock, but I’m unable to find them in the 1871 census. In 1876, however, John Strachan married Ann Miller at Stevenston, Ayrshire, and in 1881 they’re in Ardrossan, John Strachan working as a railway stoker. John went to join family in Braidwood, Illinois in 1882 but returned to Ayrshire in 1883, and in 1891 he and his growing family are in Steventston where John is a crane driver. By 1901 they’re back in Ardrossan, at Harbour Place, John working as a railway carriage inspector and their eldest children are a chemist’s assistant at the explosive factory, a grocer’s shop assistant and an oilskin maker’s assistant. Then in 1923 John, his wife Ann and their daughter Margaret migrated to USA, giving their next of kin as their daughter Mrs Jessie Strachan of Merne Street, Greenock and going to join their son Robert Strachan of South 60th Street, Cicero, Chicago. In 1925 John and Ann made a trip to Canada, and their border crossing papers state John was still a railway carriage examiner and they were going to visit relative William Strachan of Elsmere Avenue, Windsor, Ontaria. John Strachan died on 3 June 1926 at Cicero, Chicago.

Happy 90th birthday Bunty! She lives in Aberdeen and is my half second cousin once removed, the granddaughter of my half gg aunt Margaret Fraser.

Rob in Tyneside, a Strachan descendent, is no doubt saying Happy Birthday to his daughter.
