Two events today – a Strachan who died too young and an Aberdeenshire tailor who disappears from the census.
10 July 1861 (born about 1840)
Janet Strachan was born in about 1840 at Shewalton Colliery, Ayrshire, daughter of my ggg uncle Munro Strachan and Janet Jamieson. She is with her parents at Shewalton Colliery in 1841, living close to lots of relatives, and at MacReadie’s Land, Dreghorn in 1851. Her father died in 1854 and her mother remarried. In 1858 Janet Strachan married coal miner James Wilson at Irvine, and in the 1861 census they are at Dreghorn with James’ younger brother as a boarder. Janet gave birth to son James in April 1861 but he died at the age of 2 months from congenital disability and thrush. Then on 10 July 1861, Janet died of bronchitis and phthisis (tuberculosis).
10 July 1864
Birth of George Cowie at Savoch, Aberdeenshire, son of William Cowie and Elizabeth Cheyne – his great grandmother was my gggg grandmother Janet Sangster. He is with his parents and siblings, his father a farm servant, at Littlemill, Ellon in 1871, and in 1881 he’s a lodger at Ythan Terrace, Ellon, age 17 and occupation tailor. He then seems to disappear from the census records, and there are two many Aberdeenshire records for a marriage of a George Cowie on ScotlandsPeople to know which, if any, could be him. So he’s a mystery at the moment.
