This is where you’ll find some articles I’ve written that are about more general topics relating to my family history research, plus some transcripts of old, out of copyright documents.

So far the articles are:
Farm servant life in north-east Aberdeenshire
Why your Scottish ancestor may not be in the parish registers
Description of Hurlford, Ayrshire in 1875 (transcript of 1875 document)
Shewalton Colliery, Ayrshire, in the 1840s (transcript of 1842 document)
Crookedholm: Cowan’s Row and the Wellington Pit (where my Strachan grandparents lived and worked in Ayrshire)

  1. Hi Judy
Thank you for taking the time to write your excellent description of Crofting and Farming life in Aberdeenshire .
My gg grandfather was a crofter in Methlick Parrish John Marnoch and His wife Isabel Wilson were on Menteach croft in 1800. Their son William married a Isabella Hay in Methlick church on 23 Oct. 1853. Any connection to your Hay I know Isabella lived in Ellon at one time.
